GAE lauds USDOE's granting Georgia NCLB flexibility

"We applaud Secretary Cox and her team’s efforts in securing Georgia as one of the states chosen to receive flexibility in administering No Child Left Behind (NCLB), “ said Jeff Hubbard, president of the 40,000-plus Georgia Association of Educators (GAE). “This new flexibility should translate in our students and schools being provided more time and help in attaining their goals instead of immediately being treated punitively and being labeled as

GAE offers recommendations

on CRCT dilemma

In a recent letter to State Superintendent Cox from GAE President Jeff Hubbard, he expressed his profound concern with the recent decision to discard the results from the social studies CRCT exams and the disappointing performance of Georgia’s fifth and eighth grade students on the mathematics portion. Hubbard said, “While this situation is indeed perplexing, GAE believes there is a unique opportunity for Georgia decision makers to come together and devise a solution that will benefit all of our children.” Read more

2008 Legislative Update

Thanks to GAE members for all of your efforts in helping make this legislative session as successful as it was! Let’s keep up the momentum! Some have determined that the way to solve Georgia’s public school difficulties is to send children to private schools. Doing this does nothing for the public school issues or for the children who are left to work in a struggling school system. Read more

Valdosta members receive $5000 grants

Shenell Collier and Kimberlee Harris, two teachers at J.L. Newbern Middle School in Valdosta, Ga., have received a $5,000 Student Achievement Grant from The NEA Foundation that will allow students to create and present their own poetry and rap performances for fellow students schoolwide, drawing from their own personal experiences and using state standards for

language arts and social studies. Read release
